Indian Shuttlers HS Prannoy and Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Advance in China Masters 2023, Aiming for Olympic Qualification
In the opening round of the China Masters 2023 badminton tournament, HS Prannoy and the men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, two of India’s top shuttlers, secured their spots in the second round with impressive straight-game victories.
HS Prannoy, the world No. 8 in men’s singles, faced a tough challenge from the 12th-ranked Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Prannoy initially trailed 6-9 in the opening game but made a strong comeback, ultimately winning 21-18, 22-20 in a closely contested match that lasted 50 minutes. Prannoy’s persistence and determination paid off as he advanced to the next round.
In contrast, the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked fifth in the world, dominated their match against England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. They secured a comfortable 21-13, 21-10 victory in just 37 minutes, showcasing their strong teamwork and skills on the court.
However, India’s sole women’s singles representative at the tournament, Aakarshi Kashyap, faced a tough challenge against local player Zhang Yi Man, ranked 17th in the world. Despite her efforts, Kashyap lost 12-21, 14-21 in a match that lasted 33 minutes.
The China Masters 2023 is a BWF Super 750 event, and the results from this tournament will play a crucial role in players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for badminton began on May 1, 2023, and will continue until April 2024.
The tournament features some of India’s top shuttlers, including Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and Priyanshu Rajawat, who will be competing in the men’s singles events on the following day.
India’s badminton stars are aiming for strong performances at the China Masters as they strive to secure their spots in the prestigious Paris Olympics and make their country proud on the international stage.
