Amit Mishra explained the reason behind Ravichandran Ashwin’s absence from the ODIs.

What is the reason behind overlooking Ravichandran Ashwin's India's leg spinner? Amit Mishra has the answer to that.

Ravichandran Ashwin has finally been given a chance after months in the ODIs, as the right-arm-off spinner has been out of the Indian squad since January 2023. He last played an ODI in January 2023 against South Africa. Since then, R. Ashwin has been overlooked by the selectors, though he was part of the announced squad for the WTC but didn’t find his name in the playing XI. After that, he wasn’t included in the Asia Cup 2023 or the announced ODI World Cup 2023 squad, but the star bowler got the chance as his name was in the announced squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia. But what is the reason behind overlooking Ravichandran Ashwin’s India’s leg spinner? Amit Mishra has the answer to that.

According to leg-spinner Amit Mishra, R. Ashwin is a great bowler, but the only thing that drags him back is his fielding, as in ODIs Ravichandran Ashwin has only 10 overs to bowl and the rest 40 overs he has to field and sometimes bat for the team as a tailender, which Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel do well.

“Ashwin is undoubtedly a quality bowler and a wicket-taker, but remember this is not a 20-over game. It is of 50 overs. You have to bowl for 10 overs and field for 40 overs and might have to bat as well. No doubt he has been around for so long, has been a wicket-taker as well, but there is that matter of fielding as well and that is why a young player might be picked. The only reason he has been picked is because if a spinner gets injured, then the team needs to have a wicket-taking option, which Ashwin brings. Ashwin has got an edge as an off-spin option, as India already has two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in Kuldeep Yadav.”

Washington Sundar is also selected in the squad and is a good wicket-taking option for India. R. Ashwin though has chances to feature in the World Cup 2023 team as Axar Patel is injured, but that would be revealed on September 28th as it is the last date for the World Cup 2023 squad submission.
