Asian Games 2023: Bangladesh women’s cricket team claimed bronze after defeating Pakistan

Bangladesh women's, after defeating Pakistan's women's team, registered their second-only international victory against Pakistan, plus they clinched the bronze medal.

The Asian Games 2023, happening in Hangzhou, China, brought a moment of cheer for Bangladesh cricket fans as the women’s cricket team of Bangladesh clinched the bronze medal after defeating the strong Pakistan’s team. Bangladesh women’s team, after winning the toss, invited Pakistan to play, and that was a brilliant move by Bangladesh’s captain Nigar Sultana as the bowlers of Bangladesh’s team outclassed Pakistan’s batters, especially Shorna Akter, who picked up three wickets in her four-over spell, and she was well-accompanied by other bowlers of the team, Sanjida Akter Meghla, Marufa Akter, and Nahida Akter, to stop Pakistan Women’s on just 64 runs in 20 overs.

After restricting Pakistan’s (W) side to 64/9, the Bangladesh women’s team chased down the target in 18.2 overs with a loss of 5 wickets. Shamima Sultana (13), Shati Rani (13), and Shorna Akter (14) contributed to their team’s victory. Bangladesh reached the semi-finals without even playing in the quarter-finals, though their quarter-final match was scheduled against Hong Kong. As rain abandoned the match, they were promoted to the semi-finals based on their ICC rankings, where they faced India (W) in the semi-finals. Bangladesh got defeated by India in the semis by 8 wickets. Pakistan was later defeated by Sri Lanka in the semis, and then both teams fought for the bronze medal.
