Sri Lanka’s skipper, Kusal Mendis, after winning the toss, chose to bat first, and the decision proved to be correct as Sri Lanka’s openers, Pathum Nissankaand Kusal Perera, built a partnership that was needed to strengthen Sri Lanka’s innings, but the table turned 360⁰when the Australian bowlers picked up the wickets of the openers. There was no significant partnership after, in fact, the batters afterwards surrendered in front of the spin attack as Adam Zampa picked up four wickets in the match, stopping Sri Lanka at 209 runs.

Australia’s innings to chase the target of 210 runs was not impressive, as David Warner, after making just 11 runs, got out. After that, Steve Smith was dismissed on a duck, but Mitchell Marsh continued scoring runs and struck a half-century. Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis built a partnership to strengthen Australia’s position. Josh Inglis scored a fifty as well. Australia ended the match by registering their first victory in the 2023 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka by five wickets.
