ICC ODI World Cup: Players Who Hit Double Centuries In The World Cup
Hitting a century is a dream of every batter, and if they could convert that century into a double ton, then that would be like a cherry on top. Hitting centuries during the biggest event of the ICC, which is the ODI World Cup, is a batter’s dream, and great players didn’t miss this chance to score big. Some players even go beyond hitting a century and convert that into a double ton. Here is the list of those batters who scored double centuries in the ODI World Cup.
Player Name | Team | Runs | Balls Taken |
---|---|---|---|
Chris Gayle | West Indies | 215 | 147 |
Martin Guptill | New Zealand | 237 | 163 |
Glenn Maxwell | Australia | 201 | 128 |
Chris Gayle
West Indies legend and Universe Boss Chris Gayle was the first batter ever to score a double century in the ODI World Cup. The left-handed batter achieved this unique feat while batting against Zimbabwe in match number 15 of the ICC World Cup 2015. The West Indies, while batting first in the match, put a huge total of 372 runs on the scoreboard courtesy of the West Indies left-handed batter Chris Gayle, and Marlon Samuels both scored their centuries. Marlon Samuels remained unbeaten for 133 runs, while Chris Gayle went absolute berserk and scored his first ODI double hundred. Chris Gayle scored 215 runs off 147 balls before getting out on the final ball of the West Indies innings.
Martin Guptill
New Zealand’s right-handed batter Martin Guptill becomes the second batter in ODI World Cup history to score a double century, and surprisingly, he scored his double century during the ODI World Cup 2015 after Chris Gayle. New Zealand was playing against the West Indies at Wellington. After winning the toss, the Kiwis chose to bat first, and Martin Guptill was in full beast mode. He started his innings playing carefully, but after completing his century in 111 balls, he put his peddle on the accelerator and scored his double century in just 152 balls. Martin Guptill remained unbeaten with a score of 237 off 163 balls. New Zealand ended the innings with 393 runs on the board, and the West Indies could only reach 250 runs.
Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell is the latest addition to this list. The right-handed Australian batter has played innings of century for his team, and with his batting, he shocked everyone in the cricket community as Australia pulled a magical win out of the jaws of defeat because of Glenn Maxwell. Chasing 292 runs, Australia were 7 down for just 91 runs, and no one watching the match could have even thought that Australia would win the match, but “The Big Show,” Glenn Maxwell was in a different dimension and fought like a bleeding warrior who refuses to give up despite getting cramps and being unable to walk. He stood tall, guarding the wickets and scoring runs by dealing in boundaries. He ended the match with a six, simultaneously bringing his maiden double hundred in the ODI World Cup. Glenn Maxwell scored 201 runs in his inning on just 128 balls.
