Gautam Gambhir praised his former KKR teammate for his sportsmanship

Former India’s left-handed batter Gautam Gambhir has returned to his former IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, whom he represented from 2011 to 2015. But this time, he will coach the KKR instead of captaining the team. In the last two seasons of the IPL, Gautam Gambhir coached Lucknow Super Giants, and under his mentorship, LSG qualified for the Playoffs in both years. Unfortunately, the team failed to win the title in either. Now, as he is back in the SRK’s co-owned franchise, the team management is expecting the same heroics from him that he did as a captain for the KKR in 2012 and 2014.

Under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014. He joined the team in 2011 and took it to the playoffs that year, and its maiden title win was in 2012. KKR, from the past two seasons, failed to even qualify for the playoffs, so the return of Gambhir as a coach can ignite the squad’s fighting spirit this season. Ahead of their first game, KKR’s new mentor recalled and praised his former KKR teammate, from whom he learned the true meaning of selflessness. He called him “the greatest team” man.

Naming former South African batter Ryan ten Doeschate as the most selfless team player he had ever seen, he said this about the player at the KKR jersey launch event.

When I talk about selflessness, I have never said this in 42 years of my career, and I wanted to say this. The greatest team man I have ever played with, the most selfless human being, someone I can take a bullet for, someone who I can trust for life, and I can tell you this because in 2011 my first game as a KKR captain. We only had four overseas players available, and this man had a fabulous 50-over World Cup, and we went in that game with only three overseas players, and he was carrying drinks in that game with no disappointment on his face. KKR will play its first IPL 2024 match against Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 23rd March 2024.
