Shubman Gill during a test match against England

India’s test skipper Shubman Gill started Day 2 with his teammate Ravindra Jadeja, and the partnership between him and the Southpaw took the innings forward from 310 runs. The duo not only completed a 100-run partnership for the 6th wicket but also ensured that the team moved towards a big total. Ravindra Jadeja scored his fifty, and Shubman crossed the mark of 150 runs. Unfortunately, Jadeja failed to score a century and got out on 89 runs when Josh Tongue’s bouncer delivery surprised him and hit high on the bat, which got caught by wicket-keeper Jamie Smith.

The wicket didn’t stop the Indian captain as he went on to score his first double hundred in England and became the first Indian test skipper to score a double hundred in England. He received support from Washington Sundar on the other end, as the two helped India cross the 500-run mark. Washington Sundar was dismissed after scoring 42 runs for his team, while Shubman Gill, on the other end, surpassed Virat Kohli’s test best of 254 runs to reach 269 runs, which is the highest score in test cricket by an Indian captain. Josh Tongue got the wicket of India’s skipper in the 144th over.

Contribution from lower-order batters took India to a total of 587 runs. England opened its innings with a left-hand, right-hand duo of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, but this time Indian bowlers came guns blazing to dismiss the openers quickly. Ben Duckett got caught at slip in the 3rd over, and the next delivery dismissed Ollie Pope. Both batters got out on a duck. It didn’t take much time to dismiss Zak Crawley this time. Mohammed Siraj’s delivery got the edge of Crawley’s bat. Joe Root and Harry Brook stabilized the innings and, after getting three down, took England to 77 runs at the end of Day 2.
