Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill during a match

India vs. England: India defeated England by 4 wickets in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series played at Barabati Stadium, Odisha, to take a 2-0 series lead.

England, after winning the toss, elected to bat first. The opening duo of Phil Salt and Ben Duckett started the innings for England, and like the previous match, they both started taking on Indian bowlers and scored 75 runs in 10 overs. Ben Duckett scored his fifty in the 11th over, but in the same over, Phil Salt, while trying to hit a maximum, got out as England lost its first wicket. Ben Duckett was the next to get dismissed. Joe Root kept scoring runs from one end, and from the other, he got the support of Harry Brook for a brief. Harshit Rana dismissed Harry Brook and broke the partnership. Joe Root scored 69 runs for his team before getting out. Liam Livingstone contributed 41 runs as England reached 304 runs in 49.5 overs.

Chasing the target of 306 runs, India started with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The skipper had gone through a rough patch before this match, but he proved he was still the best in the business. He started taking on England bowlers in the powerplay, and Shubman Gill joined him in the cause; both batters scored their fifties and took them to 136 runs in 14 overs, but after scoring 60 runs for his team, Shubman Gill was bowled by Overton to get the first wicket for his team after that Virat Kohli got out on 5 runs. Rohit Sharma kept going from his end and scored his century in 76 balls. He got out on 119 runs, and batters like Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer contributed significant runs to take India to a win in 44.3 overs.

It was good and really enjoyed being out there, scoring some runs for the team. Important game with the series on the line but I broke it down to pieces about how I wanted to bat. Longer than T20s and shorter than Tests and I wanted to break it down. I wanted to bat as deep as possible and that was my focus. Looking at the pitch – when you play on black soil, it tends to skid on a bit and you have to show the full face of the bat initially. Then they bowled into the body and kept it on the stumps and that’s where I prepared my plan and tried to access the gaps. Got very good support from Gill and Shreyas as well. Enjoy batting with Gill. Very classy player and doesn’t seem to get overawed by the situation and the numbers are there as well, if I’m not wrong, for Gill.

We got into some nice positions with the bat but we need a few of us to catch fire and push us to 350. Another great innings from Rohit; he’s been doing it in ODI cricket for a while. Maybe it skidded on a bit and played well but the opposition played well. We tried to get to 330-350, maybe that would have been defendable. Just keep taking steps in the right direction though results are not there but we need to keep going.
