India vs Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka’s women’s skipper Chamari Athapathtu and batter Harshitha Samarawickrama played their dream innings in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 final to clinch their maiden Asia Cup title.
After winning the toss, India Women’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur decided to bat first. Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana opened the innings for India. Smriti Mandhana was batting phenomenally and taking on Sri Lanka’s bowlers quite easily. Shafali Verma struggled a bit to score quick runs, and in the seventh over, while charging down the crease, he was caught in front of the stumps. Uma Chetry got out in the 9th over, and then India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur on the score of 11. Smriti Mandhana scored runs from her end and hit her fifty with some fireworks from Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh, helping India put 165/6 on the board at the end of 20 overs.
Sri Lanka’s start to the chase wasn’t good as a terrible mix-up led to the run-out dismissal of Vishmi Gunaratne on the score of 1, but skipper Chamari Athapaththu didn’t let the wicket harm Sri Lanka’s batting line-up, she got the support of fellow teammate Harshitha Samarawickrama, and both started putting pressure on the Indian bowlers. Both had a partnership of 91 runs as Chamari Athapaththu got out after scoring 61 runs. India was eyeing a comeback in the game, but Harshitha Samarawickrama had her eyes on the win and continued scoring runs. Kavisha Dilhari supported her teammate well as Sri Lanka chased the target in 18.4 overs to win their maiden Asia Cup title.

India vs Sri Lanka Women’s Asia Cup 2024 Final: Captains’ Corner
We played good cricket throughout the tournament but today we made a lot of fumbles. It was a decent total. Sri Lanka batted really well and didn’t make it easy for us. There are a lot of areas we can improve upon and we will remember this day. Sri Lanka have been playing good cricket for quite some time. Congrats to them and credit goes to them.
Harmanpreet Kaur(India Women Captain) said post-match
I am really happy about our team performance, especially the batting performances, especially Harshitha and Dilhari. We have played really good cricket in the last 12 months and we want to continue it. Never saw such a crowd, so special thanks goes to the Sri Lankan people who came out to watch the game. This win is good not only for the team but the whole Sri Lanka because we have to inspire the next generation. I have to lead from the front, that’s my duty for my country. We always talk about positive things in the dressing room, for which the credit goes to the head coach and the support staff. Our next target is the World Cup. But we want to take it one match at a time.
