MI vs DC: Mumbai Indians defeats Delhi Capitals to qualify for the playoffs.

Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mumbai Indians opened with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, and the latter started his innings on a good note, hitting two sixes to Dushmantha Chameera in the 2nd over of the innings. Rohit Sharma was sent to the dug-out in the 3rd over by Mustafizur Rahman, and then came Will Jacks, who pushed the pace and took the score to 50 runs before getting caught by Vipraj Nigam. Suryakumar Yadav started his innings cautiously and built partnerships with Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma, but it was his partnership with Naman Dhir that proved to be deadly for Delhi Capitals, as the two accumulated enough runs in the last 5 overs to take their team’s score to 180 runs. Suryakumar Yadav scored his fifty, and Naman Dhir contributed 24 runs off 8 balls.

Chasing the target of 181 runs, Delhi Capitals’ start wasn’t good as they lost Faf du Plessis in the 2nd over on the score of 12 runs. KL Rahul was the next batter to get dismissed, and then Aishek Porel was stumped by Ryan Rickelton. Sameer Rizvi and Vipraj Nigam’s brief partnership took their team’s score beyond 100 runs. Mitchell Santner broke the partnership and dismissed both Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma. DC was bowled out for 121 runs in 18.2 overs.

(On if it is a luxury to have Bumrah and Santner) Absolutely. I can throw them the ball whenever I want. They bring such control and perfection, which makes my job easy. We initially thought 180 would be good but it did not look like that. Would have been very happy to get to 160, but the way Naman and Surya finished it, especially Naman, to come out and just hit on a difficult track like that, it was outstanding.

Felt we were excellent in the field – the guys showed great fight. The bowlers pitched up. Not the easiest pitch to bat on. We let it slip in the last two overs. Momentum is a real thing in cricket. The way they counter-punched to get almost 50 in the last two overs…undoing the work of the first 17-18 overs, we lost that momentum. If you look at the two teams, it was a case of David and Goliath. I enjoy that because it gives you the opportunity to play as a team. Rizvi showed some signs – he has some talent there. When you come up against a team like this…we were there for the first 17-18 overs and then we were pretty average.
