Marcus Stoinis Retires from ODI Cricket Surprisingly

Marcus Stoinis Retire

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has shockingly announced his retirement from ODI cricket on February 6, 2024, effective immediately, to concentrate solely on T20 cricket for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Marcus Stoinis played 71 ODI matches for Australia, but he has been thankful for his time in the green and gold and has realized it is the right time to walk away from ODI cricket.

It is a shattering loss for Australia in their quest to win the Champions Trophy, given that they have multiple players who are already hurt. Stoinis departs with a good ODI career in hand, having scored 1,495 runs with an average of 26.69 and taken 48 wickets at a strike rate of 43.12. He last played the ODI against Pakistan in Perth in 2024.

Why Marcus Stoinis Took Retirement?

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,”

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald), and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.”

“I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.”

One of the main reasons he took retirement was so he could devote more time to T20I matches. He plays for many franchises, and to earn more money, he wants to devote all his time to the T20I format.

Marcus Stoinis Wife And Family

Marcus Stoinis was born in Perth, Western Australia, on August 16, 1989. His father, Chris Stoinis, played a significant role in Marcus’s cricketing career. Chris fought non-Hodgkin lymphoma for many years and died in 2017. Marcus’s sister, Natasa, is a doctor who actively participated in their father’s care until his death. Marcus has often credited his family for their unwavering support throughout his career. Marcus is married to Stephanie Muller, and the couple has two children, Leo and Mia.

Other Australian Players Missing the ICC Champions Trophy

Australia’s squad was injured several times before the ICC Champions Trophy. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, in addition to Stoinis, might miss the entire tournament due to a back injury. Captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood, too, are ruled out with ankle and side strain injuries, respectively. This means Australia must make several changes to its provisional squad before the main event.

Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign starts against England in Lahore on February 22. It will then play matches against South Africa and Afghanistan. The team will have to regroup and find replacements for the gaps left by these key players.

Stoinis’ retirement and the injuries to other players have certainly added to the Australian team’s challenges as they prepare for the prestigious tournament.
