PBKS IPL 2023: Punjab Kings is one of the teams in IPL history who never won the IPL title and will be looking to get their name engraved on the IPL trophy. They spent lots of money on recent IPL Auctions but failed to get the result from it.
The closest they came to getting their hands on the title was in the 2014 season when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 3 wickets. Punjab batted first in that match and posted a total of 199/4 which used to be a huge total at that time because the game was not that explosive. Wriddhiman Saha scored an explosive century ( 115 runs in 55 balls) in that match, but then Manish Pandey’s 94 runs inngins made Kolkata Knight Riders clinch the title and Punjab Kings not able to play the finals again after that.
Punjab Kings put all their money into just one player Sam Curran who became the most expensive player in the IPL history as Punjab Kings got him for 18.50 Crores, breaking all the previous records. His performance in the T20 World Cup 2022 was one of the reasons why he was given this huge amount. He was the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2022 and one of the solid reasons why England won the World Cup that year. He got 13 wickets and his spell in the final was one of the best as he picked 3 wickets by giving 12 runs.
Punjab Kings six new players in IPL 2023:
- The player of the tournament in T20 World Cup 2022, Sam Curran, is the most expensive player in IPL history, and Punjab Kings was the one who brought him this huge 18.50 Crore amount.
- Sikandar Raza was one of the steal deals for the Punjab Kings, and it was surprising how other teams did not show interest in one of the best all-rounders.
- Harpreet Bhatia is also one of the new talents with lots of potential to give them more depth in batting.
- Mohit Rathee and Shivam Singh are the other picks for them in the auction.
PBKS IPL 2023: Punjab Kings Strengths:
Punjab Kings have a well-experienced batting lineup that can score runs at the right pace and give the team a good start.
Experience Batting Lineup
Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan will open the innings for Punjab Kings and they have all the world experience to give the team a good start. At 1st down, Bhanuka Rajapaksa or Sikandar Raza can come in. At 2nd down.
Liam Livingstone, one of the best hard hitter All-Rounder, will come to play to give them quick runs and can bowl from both hands, one of the rarest skills in the cricket world. He can bowl off-spin or leg spin, which gives the Punjab kings an advantage in using him as two bowlers and also one hard hitter.
Best All-Rounder Unit
Sam-Curran, Liam Livingstone and Sikandar Raza might be the best All-Rounders unit in IPL if compared to the other team’s All-Rounders unit. They all can perform with bat and ball really well and have all the experience of playing T20 matches at the highest level of cricket. They all are superstars of their respective countries.
PBKS IPL 2023: Punjab Kings Weakness:
Fragil pace bowling unit
The pace bowling unit of Punjab Kings is something they are not going to be very confident in as Arshdeep Singh just came from the injury and not performing well as he used to and recently, he created a record for bowling most No-Balls which is not a record that someone wanna keep it because in T20 matches it is a crime to ball it. He recently bowled 5 No-Ball in a match against Sri Lanka after he came back from the injury. He has the record of bowling the most No-Balls (14) in the T20 format, which can be a big issue for the Punjab king’s side.
Kagiso Rabada is the only bowler on which Punjab Kings can rely, which is a huge concern for them. They have Nathan Ellis, who lacked the IPL matches and, till now, bowled only 17 overs in IPL. Sam-Curran is theirs but he is not a proper All-Rounder and India’s pitch doesn’t suit his bowling as he will not going to get as much swing or bounce as he gets in Australia or England.
Jonny Bairstow’s availability concern
It is still not clear whether Jonny Bairstow will be going to play in IPL 2023 or not because there is no update from English Cricket Board about his injury update as he missed the last year’s T20 World Cup due to knee injury.
Shikhar Dhawan’s Slow strike rate
Shikhar Dhawan is not known for his power-hitting innings but more for long runs inngins in which he scores 80-90 runs in 70-80 balls with a strike rate of around 110, which is low if you are an opener in T20. He lost his place recently in ODI as an opener and in T20 because Shubman Gill showed his class scoring centuries in every format and even double century in ODI.
How Deep Punjab Kings (PBKS) can go in the IPL 2023 Tournament Prediction:
The chances are low for Punjab Kings to qualify for the playoff as they lack the bowling power to give, but if they want to, their All-Rounder has to perform in every game to give them the edge over opponents. They are not the favorites to win the title this year, as many others teams are more settled.
