ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Six Records That Could Be Broken In This Year’s World Cup

Here is a list of the records that will most probably be broken in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

The ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 will kick off on October 5th, and there are some records in international cricket that are about to be broken by the players who are playing in this year’s World Cup. Here are some of the international cricket records that will most probably be broken and the name of the most prominent one who could break the mentioned records.

Rohit Sharma Could Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Record For The Highest Runs In The World Cup:

India’s captain Rohit Sharma has the golden opportunity to break the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the highest run in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. In the last edition of the ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma was the highest run scorer with 648 runs, and this time if the hitman continues to hit runs like he did in the ODI World Cup 2019, then he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 673 runs in a single edition of the World Cup. If he scores more than 29 runs, which he would, of course, do, he would still become the third-highest run scorer for India in the World Cup. Surpassing India’s Sourav Ganguly’s record of 1006 runs in total for the World Cup.

Most Number Of Centuries In The World Cup:

There is another record that can be broken by Rohit Sharma. Apart from the maximum runs in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, he could potentially surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the most number of centuries in the ODI World Cup. Currently,  both batters have six centuries in their names in the ODI World Cup, and if Rohit Sharma manages to pull one in this year’s World Cup, he would become the batter with the most number of centuries in the ODI World Cup.

Highest Wicket-Taker In The World Cup:

Australia’s Mitchell Starc is on his way to breaking Australian Glenn McGrath’s record of the maximum number of wickets in the World Cup. Mitchell Starc from the last two World Cups, i.e., 2015 and 2019, finished as the highest wicket taker with 22 and 27 wickets, taking his total wicket count to 49. If he is able to get 23 wickets this season, then he would become the highest wicket taker in the World Cup. Glenn McGrath is currently the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup with 71 wickets.

Maximum Number Of Centuries In The ODIs:

Virat Kohli is only three centuries away from becoming the first batter to score fifty centuries in the ODIs. With his recent Asia Cup century against Pakistan, he added 47th ODI century to his name. As Virat Kohli is going to play a minimum of nine matches in the ODI World Cup 2023, he could become the first batter in cricket history to score fifty ODI centuries. As of now, Sachin Tendulkar has the highest 49 ODI centuries to his name.

Most Wickets As An Indian Bowler In The ODI World Cup:

India’s bowler Mohammed Shami has the chance to break the record of the Indian bowlers Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath. Both of them have 44 wickets in their names, and Mohammed Shami already got 31 wickets in his pocket in the ODI World Cup. He has to pick 14 wickets in the World Cup 2023 to cross the records of the great Indian bowlers.

Most Runs In A Calendar Year:

India’s great Sachin Tendulkar’s 25-year-old record of scoring the highest total runs in a calendar year is in threat now as another Indian batter named Shubman Gill is a promising challenger to that record. The right-handed batter has so far scored 1230 runs in the 20 innings and needs 665 runs to break the record of Sachin’s 1894 runs in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar scored these many runs back in 1998.
