Strengths and Weaknesses of Each Team in IPL 2024
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is about to start on March 22, 2024, and every team is trying to gel up again with their teammates. Every coach and captain tries to make their team the best by finding their team’s strengths and pointing out their team’s weaknesses to improve them so they can clinch the IPL 2024 Trophy.
Every IPL team has a lot of data and analysts who compare every bowler and batter, which helps the captain decide when to give that player a chance and when not to use it. Analysis has now become a big part of cricket, and every team has several analysts who focus on data and match-ups, which will give the upper hand to their team.
The captain of Mumbai Indians and the Indian Cricket Team, Rohit Sharma, uses data analysis very much whenever he leads his team. Because of that, he won five IPL titles and did great in the International circuit. However, there are captains like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli who use more of their intuition, or you can say gut feeling, to decide which option is best for the situation.
Let’s Find out Every IPL Team of the 2024 season Strengths and Weakness
1. Chennai Super Kings Strengths and Weaknesses
The MS Dhoni team suits CSK the most because he directs the whole team, and even in the auctions, he chooses which player he wants. The defending champion, CSK, will again be the favorite to win this year’s IPL.
Strengths: This year, Chennai Super Kings looks more like a balanced team. The batting unit looks great, and the top six players are experienced and skilled in their roles. However, Rachin Ravindra has to step up in place of the injured Conway.
Weakness: Chennai Super Kings’ bowling unit will be weaker because there are not very good bowlers. Deepak Chahar will find it hard to stop the runs or take wickets if the ball does not swing the match. Then, it will be hard for Mukesh Choudhary to perform like he did in the last IPL.
2. Mumbai Indians Strengths and Weaknesses
It is going to be a make-or-break season for the Mumbai Indians team because of the big changes that have come on the side as Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team. A Few reasons for replacing Rohit with Hardik were that Mumbai Indians did not have a good last three seasons, and Rohit Sharma averaged around 24.89 since IPL 2019.
Strengths: The Mumbai Indians are already the best team, but their main strength is their core of nine Indian players. The inclusion of Coetzee gave big strength to their bowling unit, and the middle order of the Mumbai Indians is amazing, as Hardik, Nabi, and Tim David are power hitters who can win the match single-handedly.
Weakness: Mumbai Indians have no weaknesses on paper, but the only issue they can have is bonding, which can be a bit toxic because of Hardik Pandya’s recent captaincy change.
3. Delhi Capitals Strengths and Weaknesses
Delhi Capitals is one of the teams that always looked better on paper but failed to deliver on a pitch, which is why they never won the IPL title. They did reach the IPL finals once in 2020 against Mumbai Indians during the COVID-19 time under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy but lost in the finals against the mighty Mumbai Indians.
Strengths: Rishabh Pant’s inclusion in the team is a big boost for them, and Mitchell Marsh’s form as an all-rounder who can bat and ball well will be key for them.
Weakness: There is a lot of concern for Delhi Capitals as they don’t have a solid opening pair and a very reliable bowling unit, which will trouble them if things do not go right for them.
4. Gujarat Titans Strengths and Weaknesses
It is going to be a whole new year for the Gujarat Titans because they will be without their ex-captain, Hardik Pandya, who left the team for Mumbai Indians, and now Shubman Gill will lead the side, which is going to be exciting. They brought eight new players to the team who can make or break the team.
Strengths: The inclusion of Ajmatullah Omarzai and Shahrukh Khan will give depth to the team, and the experience of Rashid Khan, David Miller, and Shubman Gill will be important for them.
Weakness: The middle order is a big concern for them because David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, and Shahrukh Khan are not dependable once, and the bowling unit is also weak because Mohammed Shami will miss the whole IPL, and there is no Hardik Pandya to bowl the overs for them.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders Strengths and Weaknesses
Kolkata Knight Riders, the two-time IPL champions under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, will once again look forward to the new edition of the IPL. This time, they will try to get them in the finals because they ended up in seventh place in the last edition.
Strengths: Gautam Gambhir will mentor the team, which is a boost. Most of the matches will be played under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, who missed last year’s IPL due to Injury. They have great opening batters and finishers like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell.
Weakness: The pace bowling unit will be the weakness for them. Even though they signed Mitchell Starc for 24+ Crore, he is still not at his peak, which he used to be in the past; there are some other pacers like Gus Atkinson.
6. Lucknow Super Giants Strengths and Weaknesses
Lucknow Super Giants once again failed to reach the final of the IPL last season when they were knocked out in the Qualifiers, but they do have a team that is capable of winning the title just like Gujarat Titans did in their debut season.
Strengths: Their batting lineup is amongst the best in the IPL, and from the opening slot to the middle order, they have a player who can win the match for them.
Weakness: Pace bowling unit is their weakness because they don’t have experienced bowlers who are doing well in the IPL. They are also too dependent on foreign players, which is risky because many International teams are going to have some matches during the end phase of IPL 2024.
7. Punjab Kings Strengths and Weaknesses
Shikhar Dhawan will lead the Punjab Kings side and will look to get better results than what they had in the past seasons because they were not able to qualify for the qualifiers since 2014.
Strengths: The pace unit of Punjab Kings has been amazing in recent years, with many experienced players who can take many wickets in the opening spell and also in the death overs.
Weakness: The middle order is their weakness, as no strong-hitting player can finish the game, and there are very few spin options in the bowling department.
8. Rajasthan Royals Strengths and Weaknesses
Rajasthan Royals is one of the strongest contenders to win this season’s IPL, but in the last season, they failed to even qualify for the Qualifiers by some points. This season, they are looking strong together.
Strengths: Their top order is one of the best because Jos Buttler and young Yashasvi Jaiswal are their openers, and then comes Sanju Samson, Shimron Hetmyer, and Liam Livingstone, giving them the freedom to strike the ball from the first delivery.
Weakness: The all-rounder department does not have many great players, which can hurt them because, in T20, the All-Rounders are the most important part of the team.
9. Royal Challengers Bangalore Strengths and Weaknesses
The good news for the Royal Challengers Bangalore is that their women’s teams won the WPL 2024 season already, and now it is time for the Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis teams to clinch the men’s IPL title.
Strengths: RCB’s main strength over the year has been its experienced batting lineup, and this year, they will also rely on Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, and Virat Kohli. However, the good news for them is that Cameron Green is included in the team, which will give them more firepower.
Weakness: The pace bowling unit has been their biggest weakness over the years, and this year, they also don’t have reliable bowlers who can comfort them in defending their total.
10. Sunrisers Hyderabad Strengths and Weaknesses
The two-time champions, the Sunrisers, have always been active in the auctions and bring some of the most exciting players, just like they did this year when they signed Travis Head and Wanindu Hasaranga into their team as all-rounders.
Strengths: bowling has been their strength over the past, and they are a very good team in defending low totals, which they did in the past. Hasaranga, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, T. Natarajan, and Pat Cummins will give them great strengths.
Weakness: The management has been a bit confused recently because they cannot select their best 11, and the batting unit has not performed well for the team over the past years.
