The BCCI’s latest move to bring fairness in the game of cricket, especially during the Indian Premier League, got the attention of the fans when umpires were spotted on the field inspecting the batters’ bats during the game. The On-Field Gauge Test is a new addition to the set of rules that make the game of cricket fair. The umpires now have the authority to check the bat size of the batters in an ongoing match. Though it is a regular practice in the game, this is the first time that umpires are checking the bat size anytime during the game, and that’s what spectators saw in the recent few matches of the IPL 2025.

What Is On-Field Gauge Test?

It is a bat-size test done by the on-field umpires using a triangle-shaped tool. The tool has dimensions mentioned on it, and if the bat’s dimensions are under the prescribed limits, then it will be passed to the bat. The dimensions of a legal bat should be under or exactly the measurements mentioned. Depth (2.68 inches), width (4.33 inches), and edge thickness (1.61 inches). If the dimensions are not met, the bat is declared illegal to use, and that’s what happened with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals players.

In April, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya and players like Shimron Hetmyer and Phil Salt’s bats were checked during a match, and all of them passed the Gauge Test. However, recently, when the same test was applied to KKR’s batters Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, their bats were found over the prescribed dimensions, and they were commanded to change that.

Why Was The On-Field Gauge Test For Bat Introduced?

Before 2025, players’ bats were tested one day before the match, which gave players ample time to use a different bat during the game. With the new rule, this can’t happen now, which will be a justice to the bowlers.
