Brighton’s Mitoma Called Up for AFC Asian Cup Despite Injury Concerns

Brighton's Mitoma surprises with AFC Asian Cup call-up despite injury concerns, leaving manager and fans intrigued.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s forward, Kaoru Mitoma, has received a surprise call-up for Japan’s squad in the AFC Asian Cup 2024, raising eyebrows as the player is currently nursing an injury. Manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed his astonishment, given Brighton’s earlier report indicating a four to six-week recovery period for Mitoma.

In a recent interview ahead of Tuesday’s game against West Ham, De Zerbi stated, “I’m really surprised because my medical staff told me Mitoma needs four, six weeks for his injury. For me, it’s difficult to think he can play in the Asian Cup. But I am a fan of Mitoma, of all my players, so if they can play for their national team, I am very happy and very proud.”

Japan’s manager, Hajime Moriyasu, acknowledged Mitoma’s injury but expressed optimism about his recovery. Moriyasu stated, “I don’t know if [Mitoma] will be ready for the first match, but he is recovering well and I expect him to be available at an early stage.”

Japan, aiming for a record fifth Asian Cup title, is set to kick off their campaign on January 14 against Vietnam, followed by matches against Iraq and Indonesia in Group D.

Despite Mitoma’s unexpected call-up, Brighton had already been preparing for his absence in January, with upcoming matches against West Ham, Stoke City, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Seagulls, facing multiple injuries this season, currently have key players like Solly March, Joel Veltman, Tariq Lamptey, Ansu Fati, and Igor Julio sidelined.

Mitoma’s inclusion in Japan’s squad adds an interesting twist to Brighton’s preparations, as the club navigates a challenging period with a depleted roster. The football community will keenly watch Mitoma’s recovery and potential impact on Japan’s quest for Asian Cup glory.
