Liverpool Eager to Retain Virgil van Dijk Despite Klopp’s Departure
Liverpool’s top brass is determined to keep captain Virgil van Dijk at Anfield beyond this summer, even amidst the imminent managerial and staff changes following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement to leave at the end of the season, sources have informed Football Insider.
Van Dijk, 32, expressed uncertainty about his future with Liverpool after Klopp’s bombshell announcement, emphasizing the significant task ahead for the club in shaping its direction under new management. However, insiders reveal that club executives are eager to retain key players like Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, despite their ages and strong associations with Klopp.
It is believed that any potential new manager might opt to keep the core of the Reds’ squad intact for at least another season. Klopp played a pivotal role in Van Dijk’s decision to join Liverpool from Southampton for a reported £75 million in 2018. Since then, the Dutch defender has been a linchpin in Liverpool’s success, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and more.
Van Dijk, under contract until June 2025, currently serves as the captain of Klopp’s side, leading the charge in the 2023-24 Premier League campaign where Liverpool is positioned at the top of the table, holding a five-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City.
Amidst other transfer speculations, Football Insider previously revealed the Liverpool board’s intent to retain Mohamed Salah, who has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League clubs. The Reds seem determined to secure the future of their key players, signaling a commitment to maintaining their competitive edge even in the face of managerial changes.
