Manchester City is preparing to part ways with backup goalkeeper Zack Steffen in 2024, Football Insider sources reveal. The 28-year-old’s recent struggles with knee injuries have left him with no long-term prospects at the club.

Steffen’s contract is set to expire in June 2025, but City has no plans to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium. The United States international has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Currently, Steffen finds himself behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega in the goalkeeping hierarchy at the Etihad. Last season, he spent a loan spell at Middlesbrough, where their promotion hopes were dashed in a playoff semi-final defeat to Coventry. During his time at Middlesbrough, Steffen made 45 appearances across all competitions, recording 10 clean sheets but conceding 56 goals.

Since joining Manchester City in 2019, Steffen has made just 21 competitive appearances, primarily featuring in cup competitions. Notably, he played a full 90 minutes in every round as City secured the League Cup during the 2020-21 campaign.

With 29 caps for the United States, Steffen was once a prominent figure in the national team but has not played for his country since March 2022. He has since been replaced in the national squad by Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Manchester City, who have primarily relied on Ederson in the Premier League this season, currently tops the league table, albeit having played one more match than Tottenham. The team’s next fixture is against Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 7.
