Sources have informed Football Insider that Ruben Neves is planning to leave Al-Hilal next summer and could return to the Premier League, with both Newcastle and Manchester City showing interest in the midfielder.
The 26-year-old is reportedly not looking to leave the Saudi Pro League outfit mid-season, just months after completing a reported £47 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite Premier League clubs voting against a ban on associated-party loan deals for the January window, which would have allowed Newcastle to sign Neves temporarily from Al-Hilal, the Portugal international is not expected to leave mid-season.
However, both Newcastle and Manchester City are believed to be keen on Neves, with plans to make a move at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. This opens the door for a potential return to the Premier League for the midfielder.
Football Insider previously reported that Manchester City have a concrete interest in Neves as they seek a replacement for Kalvin Phillips, who is expected to depart in January. City manager Pep Guardiola is said to be a huge fan of Neves, believing he fits the profile needed for the treble-winners going forward.
Newcastle, on the other hand, has a long-standing admiration for Neves, who continues to be a regular for the Portugal national team despite his move to Saudi Arabia. Neves has made 17 club appearances across all competitions this season, contributing two goals and one assist.
While a January move for Neves is unlikely for both clubs, the summer transfer window could see a Premier League return for the talented midfielder.
Newcastle and Manchester City will be closely monitoring Neves’ situation at Al-Hilal, and the player himself is reportedly keen on a return to England’s top flight.
