It was a surprising move from UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath but a new ray of hope for all the Indians, especially for the Uttar Pradesh Football players who were struggling to be even selected for the ISL teams because they don’t have the facilities to play the football.
On September 2, 2024, in the first-ever Kolkata Derby in the Lucknow KD Singh Babu Stadium, Yogi Adityanath, alongside other All Indian Football Federations senior members, announced the huge project of constructing 827 playgrounds and 18 new football stadiums in the UP.
What changes can the new UP Football Hub plan bring?
A Vision for Football Excellence
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Adityanath, 18 new football stadiums are being constructed, each in 18 national teams, supplemented with 827 pitches for quality football facilities in every nook and corner of the Northern Territory. These vast grounds and stadiums have been chalked out to give enough opportunities for training, tournaments, and competitions and to encourage a strong football culture nationwide.
Rapid Renovation and Commitment
This was announced at the venue in Lucknow on the day the two Mumbai-based rivals, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, clashed with each other. The match, an absolute delight for any football enthusiast, well reflected the dedication of the state government towards the sport. The renovation work of KD Singh Babu Stadium, where the derby was to be hosted, was completed in a record 19 days, reflecting the commitment and accountability of the government.
Support from the Government and AIFF
This was made possible through the cooperation of the government of Uttar Pradesh and the All India Football Federation. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey thanked the CM for his immense support: “The rapid renovation of the stadium and extensive plans for new facilities are all giant leaps toward developing Uttar Pradesh into a powerhouse in football.”
Grassroots Development and Future Prospects
The grassroots-level development of 827 playing fields is a godsend blessing to grassroots football. The aim is to make quality playing fields available for each block to nurture youngsters’ skills in the sport and make it popular among children. If this grassroots approach succeeds, it will build the foundation for football in Uttar Pradesh, which may further help produce international and national players.
Boost for Local Economy and Community
Apart from the sport, the new development of stadiums and fields will likely impact the local economy in several ways. The development projects will create job opportunities and surely boost economic activities in various regions. Further, with increasing attention towards football, several communities will likely acquire a more community-hearted attitude and an entertaining sporting area for youth.
The announcement by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath marked the beginning of a long, much-awaited dream for uplifting football in Uttar Pradesh. With the construction of 18 stadiums and 827 playing fields, this state is set to emerge as the hub of football in India. This will surely upgrade the sports scenario and boost a new generation of football viewers and players.
