What are Liverpool’s options after they failed to sign Caicedo and Lavia?
Liverpool is one of the most successful clubs in English football, but they have struggled to find the right balance in their midfield this season. They have missed out on two-star midfielders who could have improved their squad and added more depth and quality.
The first one is Moises Caicedo, a 19-year-old Ecuadorian sensation who plays for Brighton. Caicedo was linked with Liverpool in January, but they failed to meet Brighton’s £100 million asking price. Chelsea, who had been chasing him for months, swooped in and agreed a deal with Brighton in the summer. However, in a shocking twist, Caicedo rejected Liverpool’s offer of £111 million and decided to join Chelsea instead, saying he had given his word to the Blues in May. The second one is Romeo Lavia, a 17-year-old Belgian prodigy who plays for Manchester City. Liverpool identified Lavia as their main target for the defensive midfield role, as they lacked a natural replacement for Fabinho. They made three bids for Lavia, but all of them were rejected by City, who consider him as one of their future stars. Lavia has impressed Pep Guardiola with his maturity, intelligence, and versatility and has already made his senior debut for City this season. Liverpool could not convince City to sell him and had to look elsewhere for a defensive midfielder.
Liverpool are reportedly chasing another midfielder who could fill the gap in their squad. He is Ryan Gravenberch, a 20-year-old Dutch international who plays for Bayern Munich. Gravenberch is a powerful, dynamic, and skillful midfielder who can play as a defensive midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder. He has been linked with several top European clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid. However, Liverpool are said to be leading the race for his signature, as they are willing to offer him more game time than he currently gets at Bayern. Gravenberch could be a great addition to Liverpool’s midfield, as he has the attributes to suit Jurgen Klopp’s style of play and add more energy and creativity to the team.
