UFC reigning featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has turned every MMA fan’s eye on him with his recent performances where he won over the former featherweight champs Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. The “El Matador” knocked out both champs flamboyantly in his fights to prove himself. He made his way to the top by defeating some of the best in the 145lbs division. His resume includes victories over Josh Emmett, Bryce Mitchell, and Ryan Hall; the Spaniard crushed all of them to reach the pinnacle of the featherweight division.
Ilia Topuria has done enough to cement himself as the best fighter in the featherweight division, but the Spaniard ain’t stop here as he is eyeing one more title to his name. In fact, he dreams of becoming the first three-division champions of the UFC. As of now, he is focusing on getting a shot at the lightweight title and has called out Islam Makhachev multiple times after the latter’s win over Renato Moicano at UFC 311. Despite calling the lightweight champ, he is ready to show his worth at 155lbs by fighting Charles Oliveira before getting the title shot.
Is Ilia Topuria Better Than Islam Makhachev?
Islam Makhachev solidified himself as pound-for-pound number 1 after defeating Alexander Volkanovski twice and defended his title 5 times so far, but Ilia Topuria made his fight against fighters like Alexander Volkanovski look easy though Islam Makhachev won against the former featherweight twice, in the rematch, an untrained Volkanovski fought Islam as the former champ accepted to fight Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 on a two weeks short notice only to get knocked out in the first round of the main event.
Where as he entered the Octagon at UFC 298 with a full training camp and prepared himself for the Spaniard but the latter threw a right hook to shut the lights out of “The Great” to became the champ.
A rematch between Topuria and Alexander Volkanvski is expected this year, but if the featherweight champ decides to move up, it will be interesting to see against whom he will fight before getting a shot at the title.
