Ilia Topuria is riding high on confidence as he is aiming for a win at UFC 317 to become a two-division champion. Way before Ilia Topuria made his name so big in the MMA circuit, he and the British MMA fighter Paddy Pimblett got into an ugly conflict backstage in 2022 during a UFC Fight Night event as Ilia Topuria confronted Paddy Pimblett due to the latter’s anti-Georgian comments on X. The feud intensified during the UFC 282 press conference, where these two threw verbal jabs and almost got into a brawl, but security stopped them.
Three years forward that incident, Ilia Topuria knocked out two great fighters, became the featherweight champion, and vacated the belt to move up to lightweight to fight for his second title, while Paddy Pimblett is slowly climbing the ladder to get into title contention. A fight between these two is inevitable, as said by the former featherweight champ, but will it happen soon, or will the fans have to wait to see that clash in the Octagon? The Spaniard has an answer.
While having a conversation with Ariel Helwani ahead of the UFC 317, Ilia Topuria denied offering a title fight to Paddy Pimblett if he wins at UFC 317 and wanted the Brit to fight Justin Gaethje next, defeat him, and then they can fight after that.
“No, that’s not going to happen. [Pimblett’s] one fight away [from] the title shot. He needs that fight because it’s going to be even better for our fight, if he gets one more win. We’re going to have, I think, the biggest fight in the in the UFC right now. [Pimblett] vs. Justin Gaethje because I think he’s going to beat him easily. I think Paddy could get that win easily because of the style.”
