Justin Gaethje Revealed The Reason For His UFC 300 Loss Against Max Holloway

Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway after their fight

Justin Gaethje lost his last fight in the lightweight division at UFC 300 against Max Holloway, who knocked out Gaethje cold with 2 seconds remaining to the final bell. Justin Gaethje was falling behind on the judge’s scorecard, and the Hawaiian showed no signs of stopping with 10 seconds remaining on the clock in the final round. Max Holloway pointed to the ground, and both fighters started exchanging punches; the Hawaiian caught the sweet spot on the chin of “The Highlight” with his right hand, making the latter drop unconscious on the canvas.

With his next fight approaching, Justin Gaethje opened up about what went wrong against Max Holloway at UFC 300. The strategy he followed in his previous fights before fighting Max backfired, as the latter can cover the distance pretty fast, and that’s what troubled him. In an interview with TNT Sports, Justin Gaethje said this about his fight.

“I think this career is crazy, every single fight you go into you can’t retain information from the fight but after the fight when you look in the hindsight. I found success against Fiziev and Chandler by being passive. I used to be aggressive but then I concentrated on not getting hit. It backfired against Max Holloway who covers distance so well and is fast. To take a stance where you say I’m not gonna get hit is detrimental to the fighter I am.”

At UFC 313, Gaethje will fight against Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event. The Azerbaijan fighter accepted the rematch on short notice as Dan Hooker, who was scheduled to fight against Justin Gaethje earlier, pulled out from the bout due to a hand injury. Rafael Fiziev has back-to-back losses, but he will try to get back to the winning ways by defeating Justin in the UFC 313.
