“Ireland don’t have fighters” Khabib Nurmagomedov Critiques Irish MMA Before Cousin’s PFL Title Defense

Former UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t have good opinions about the Irish MMA scene, and the reason behind having a negative perspective is somehow related to the rivalry of the former champ with the Irish MMA star and his former foe Conor McGregor, whom he fought at UFC 229. Khabib Nurmagomedov recently spoke his mind in an interview with the PFL as the former UFC champ will be cornering his cousin and reigning Bellator lightweight champ Usman Nurmagomedov in his title defense against the Irish MMA fighter Paul Hughes on January 25.

According to the “Eagle,” apart from Conor McGregor and Paul Hughes, Ireland hasn’t produced good fighters. Though he forgot to mention the welterweight fighter Ian Garry, he doesn’t think that Ireland’s MMA scene needs to put in more work to reach half the level of Dagestan’s MMA scene.

Brother, Ireland don’t have fighters, brother. Let’s be honest. How many fighters do you know from Ireland? Paul Hughes and Conor [McGregor], and who else? There is no fighter, brother. You come to Dagestan, you can understand… Let’s be honest, Dagestan level of MMA here [high hand gesture], but Ireland level? Not even half of Dagestan level.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov said

The 26-year-old Dagestani fighter and Khabib’s cousin Usman Nurmagomedov will fight Paul Hughes. The match-up has reignited the Russia vs Ireland heat, which started 7 years back when Conor McGregor fought Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC. However, “Eagle” managed to win against Conor via 4th round submission. The feud didn’t end in the Octagon as Khabib wasn’t satisfied with the win, and the infamous incident of team altercation followed post-fight.

At the Bellator Champion Series: Road to Dubai, fans can see Dagestan vs. Ireland 2.0, but whether Conor McGregor will attend the bout remains to be seen.
