“They have all been terrible” Chael Sonnen Harsh Comments On Japanese Fighters Ahead Of UFC 310

Japanese fighters Kai Asakura will make his UFC debut at UFC 310 and MMA promotion showed immense confidence on the RFC Bantamweight champ by putting him in the main event of the last PPV card of the year. Before Kai Asakura, there have been several Japanese fighters who graced the octagon. Tatsuro Taira, Kyoji Horiguchi were few but according to former UFC welterweight title challenger Chael Sonnen all these names don’t impress him.

[UFC 310 will be held in] the fight capital of the world, sold out. Dana White believes in you [Asakura] enough, [so] the boss puts you as the main event. That’s a lot to put on a guy [like Asakura]. And by the way, of all the things that we have learned since 1993 [the popularization of MMA]… is that how bad Japan su**s at fighting… We were always told that the secrets of martial arts come from Japan, [but] those guys are terrible. They have all been terrible.”

Chael Sonnen is known for his bold pre-fight predictions, and the former title challenger has picked Alexandre Pantoja for the main event. He is vocal in criticizing the rankings committee, and ahead of UFC 310, he mocked match-ups like UFC 310, where Kai Asakura is fighting for the title in his UFC debut.

You’re telling me we can’t get Bo Nickal and [Khamzat] Chimaev together? We can’t do it because they’re too far in the rankings. [Kai] Asakura isn’t in the rankings…We look at the rankings committee and we laugh, we don’t take these guys seriously. The reason I don’t do interviews and bring guys from the rankings committee on here is you don’t respect them…they don’t know what they’re doing.”
