Khamzat Chimaev Praised Kamaru Usman, Called Him A “Champion”

Khamzat Chimaev during a fight against Kamaru Usman

The undefeated UFC fighter Khamzat Chimaev has his respect for the former UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, whom he defeated via majority decision at UFC 294 last year. The fight was clearly a test for “The Borz” and probably the toughest one. Khamzat Chimaev is known for his explosive start, where he just attacked his opponent like a predator on its prey and finished many before Kamaru Usman in the first round of the fight. At UFC 294, he started doing the same, but “The Nigerian Nightmare,” who accepted the fight on short notice, didn’t let Khamzat take control of him and defended himself the entire round despite “Borz” being on his back.

That’s what impressed Khamzat about Usman, and praising his opponent’s toughness during an interview with CBS Sports, he said.

“Kamaru is one of the best guys who I’ve faced. He’s been No.1 pound-for-pound… People forget who was Kamaru Usman. When I beat him, everyone was talking about he’s not that good and this that, but that guy is crazy good, man. If I take somebody’s back like I took his – he has a champion’s mindset. He didn’t give [up]. He had five minutes where he defended his neck, but this is not that easy.”

Khamzat Chimaev will be fighting Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 this weekend, and the winner will increase his chances of getting a title shot next. Both fighters are coming into this fight with impressive victories in their last one, but who will get the better of whom remains to be seen. Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is confident that he can take Khamzat’s “0” at Abu Dhabi, but the “Borz” is confident enough to finish his opponent when the cage closes at UFC 308.
