UFC reigning Bantamweight champ Merab Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov don’t have a liking for each other, as the two had heated altercations and a lot of back and forth on social media before the co-main event at UFC 311. The reigning champ said that the challenger doesn’t deserve the title shot, whereas Umar Nurmagomedov accused Merab of avoiding him; nevertheless, proving his credibility and fighting prowess at UFC 311, Merab Dvalishvili defeated the “Young Eagle” in one of the most spectacular displays of MMA.
During the first two rounds, Umar Nurmagomedov showed impressive defense and striking, but from the third round, Merab Dvalishvili showed his supreme cardio and pressurized Umar to empty his gas tank until the fifth round. It was Merab who ensured his victory and broke George St-Pierre’s takedown record as well, winning the fight via unanimous decision.
In a recent interview with Europop, “The Machine” mocked Umar Nurmagomedov for his trash talk and overconfident nature before the fight.
“[Umar] thought he would win in every aspect, but everyone saw what happened and now everyone is laughing at him. In general, whatever you say before the fight comes back to you later.”
Merab Dvalishvili said
It is not yet announced who “The Machine” will face next, but it is most likely a rematch against former champ Sean O’Malley, whom Merab defeated in 2024 to become the Bantamweight champion. Umar Nurmagomedov has to prove his worth in his coming fights to get a chance again to fight for the Bantamweight gold.
Though Merab Dvalishvili won in the eyes of MMA fans and judges, former two-division champ Henry Cejudo, in his recent interview, gave the fight to the challenger based on the damage Dagestani inflicted on the Georgian fighter.
It gave me a whole nother level of respect for Merab… It’s not like Merab beat the s**t [out of Nurmagomedov]. If you really wanna talk about it. If it was a full fight, damage, as a whole. I would probably give the fight to Umar. But, because it’s based on rounds, Merab still got 3.”
