A few days back, UFC head honcho Dana White gave a shocking update regarding the featherweight division, officially announcing that Ilia Topuria has vacated his featherweight title. According to Dana White, Ilia Topuria decided to move up in the division because the Spaniard thinks he has done enough to cement his legacy. Plus, there are weight cut issues as his body is struggling to make 145 lbs.
Now, that’s what the UFC head said, and if the former featherweight champ is struggling to make 145lbs, what could be the next move of Ilia Topuria? Everyone knows that the undefeated fighter has gone back and forth with the reigning lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev, and the reigning welterweight champ, Belal Muhammad, on multiple occasions. MMA fans know that Topuria will move to the lightweight division, but whether he would fight for the title or face a top 5 contender first to prove himself is still not clear.
The lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev, is reluctant to give the former featherweight champ a title fight without facing any top contender in the lightweight division because, in his opinion, it won’t do much to his legacy to fight another featherweight champ. Islam Makhachev earlier fought former 145lbs champion Alexander Volkanovski twice and won both of his fights to become pound-for-pound champ. In his recent fight, he defeated Renato Moicano to become the first to defend the lightweight title 5 times in the UFC.
Ilia Topuria can move to the lightweight division now or to the Welterweight division to fight for his next belt after cleaning the featherweight division by defeating big names like Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski via knockout. The Spaniard has ambitions to become the first three-division champ in the UFC. There are no official updates as of now, but most likely, it would be the lightweight division where the Spaniard would move to add another belt to his name.
