New Zealand made history on Thursday, July 20, 2023, when they beat Norway 1-0 in the opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Eden Park in Auckland. It was their first-ever win at the World Cup after losing all their previous 15 games in five tournaments. It was also a remarkable display of resilience and courage after a tragic shooting in Auckland earlier that day that killed two people and the gunman and injured six others, including a police officer.
More than 42,000 fans played the game, the biggest crowd in New Zealand football history. Both teams observed a minute of silence before the game to honor the victims of the shooting. It was Hannah Wilkinson’s goal in the 48th minute, which gave New Zealand the lead, and that also was the only goal scored in the match. New Zealand surprised everyone with the result because Norway was the favorite to win the match.
The black cat women’s team had more possession than the Norway team, and they also had more corner kicks which clearly shows that they were a more attacking team. The Norway team committed 14 fouls in a match which is quite high even in Women’s football.
New Zealand has a good chance to qualify for the knockout stages from Group A, where they will face Switzerland and the Philippines next. Norway will have to improve their performance against the same opponents if they want to advance. This was a historic and emotional win for New Zealand, who showed their strength and courage after a tragic day. They made history and gave hope to their country and fans. They also played very well and deserved to win. Norway were not at their best and will have to work harder to bounce back.
