Indian Men’s Hockey Team continued their ascendancy in the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 by dominating Malaysia with an impressive 5-0 victory on Sunday. The hosts, backed by their home crowd at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, gave a masterful performance, delivering an exciting, non-stop display of top-tier hockey.
In a match that was both riveting and rewarding, Harmanpreet Singh scored his 150th international goal in the 42nd minute from a penalty corner, marking a significant career achievement. Karthi Selvam set the pace with a 15-minute goal, followed by Hardik Singh netting at 32 minutes, and both Gurjant Singh and Jugraj Singh scoring late in the game at the 53rd and 54th minutes respectively.
The Indian squad approached this match with vigor and purpose, especially given Malaysia’s successive victories against Pakistan and China. Nevertheless, the home team’s aggression and regular scoring stymied Malaysia’s attempts to stay ahead on points.
The first quarter saw a skillful display of teamwork as forward Akashdeep Singh, together with Vivek Sagar Prasad, made an early but unsuccessful attack. However, just before the quarter ended, skipper Harmanpreet Singh found local hero Karthi Selvam for a field goal, marking the game’s first score.
Though the second quarter didn’t see any goals, the third quarter saw Hardik Singh netting the ball on a rebound from the skipper’s penalty corner attempt. This widened the lead to 2-0, which was further stretched to 3-0 when Harmanpreet scored in the 42nd minute.
Not content with a three-goal lead, India maintained disciplined offensive pressure on Malaysia. Gurjant Singh and Jugraj Singh contributed with rapid-fire goals, pushing the scoreline to an unassailable 5-0 lead. Throughout the game, the Indian defenders displayed commendable tenacity, maintaining their clean sheet till the final whistle.
