The anticipated first-round clash between Karen Khachanov and Andy Murray at the Western & Southern Open took an unfortunate turn as both players withdrew from the tournament due to ongoing injuries, raising concerns about their fitness for the upcoming US Open.

Murray’s withdrawal came first, with the 36-year-old unable to participate in his third-round match in Toronto last week due to an abdominal strain. This same issue forced him to pull out of the Cincinnati tournament, where he boasts the most victories (35) of any Masters 1000 event he’s competed in throughout his career. His absence also dashes his hopes of being seeded at the upcoming US Open, which begins on August 28, given his current rank of No. 36.

Replacing Murray in the draw was lucky loser Daniel Altmaier, who was set to face Karen Khachanov. However, shortly before their scheduled match, the No. 11 seed Khachanov also withdrew from the tournament.

Khachanov, who last played a singles match at Roland Garros, has been nursing a back injury sustained from a stress fracture. Despite his successful doubles performance at the tournament alongside Robin Haase, the Russian’s decision to withdraw from the singles event has raised concerns about his readiness for the US Open.

In light of Khachanov’s withdrawal, Australian Alexei Popyrin, who narrowly missed out on the final qualifying round, stepped in to face Altmaier.

As the Western & Southern Open progresses, fans and players alike are left with the uncertainty of these two athletes’ conditions and their potential participation in the upcoming Grand Slam event.
