The Next Gen Finals, a season-ending tennis tournament for men’s under-21 players, will shift its venue to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah from 2023 to 2027, marking the ATP‘s debut in the Gulf state. This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s expanding involvement in global sports, although it has raised scrutiny due to massive investments in various disciplines. The tournament, previously held in Milan since its inception in 2017, will not only change location but also see a significant increase in prize money, reaching a record $2 million, up from $1.4 million last year.
The ATP initiated a selection process earlier this year to consider potential host cities worldwide. Ultimately, Jeddah, a port city in Saudi Arabia, was chosen, and the King Abdullah Sports City indoor facility will host the event from November 28 to December 2 this year.
Andrea Gaudenzi, the Chairman of the ATP, emphasized the organization’s global reach and its commitment to exploring new markets to foster the sport’s growth. Bringing the prestigious Next Gen ATP Finals to Jeddah is viewed as an opportunity to engage new fans, especially in a region with a substantial youth population. The decision aims to unite diverse audiences around the sport of tennis and create excitement among enthusiasts.
The shift to Jeddah not only signifies the tournament’s expansion to new territories but also reflects the increasing interest in tennis within Saudi Arabia. This development aligns with the country’s broader strategy to enhance its sports and entertainment offerings, attracting international events and investments to stimulate local economies and engage its population. The Next Gen Finals’ move to Jeddah presents an exciting new chapter in the tournament’s history, promising to capture the attention of fans and players alike in the Gulf region.
