Barcelona came back from behind to beat Villarreal 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League matchday 3 of 38 on August 27th, 2023. The star of the show was Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old sensation who made his second consecutive start for Xavi’s team. Yamal set up the opening goal for Gavi, had two shots on target, and played a key role in the decisive fourth goal scored by Robert Lewandowski.
The game was a roller-coaster of emotions for both sides, as Barca took the lead in the 12th minute of the match as Gavi headed the lob pass of Yamal into the net to give Barcelona a 1-0 lead and soon after that, in the 15th minute Frenkie de Jong scored the 2nd goal of the match, but Villarreal fought back with goals from Juan Foyth and Alex Sorloth to end the first half at 2-2 scoreline.
The start of the 2nd half was not good for Barca as they looked shaky at the back and struggled to cope with Villarreal’s pace and movement. In the 50th minute, Villarreal took the lead with the Alex Baena goal, but then in the 68th minute, the substitute Ferran Torres once again showed his skill off the bench as he scored the 3rd goal for Barcelona to make it the scoreline level. Lewandowski netted the winner after a brilliant pass from Yamal.
Yamal was the standout performer for Barca, showing his skill, vision, and creativity on the left wing. He was a constant threat to Villarreal’s defense, creating four chances and completing three dribbles. He also worked hard defensively, making two tackles and one interception. He has already impressed Xavi with his maturity and confidence and looks set to become a regular starter for Barca this season.
