No doubt, age is just a number in sport as long as the player’s strength and consistency remain unaffected, and that’s what two of the most vital cricket players of the Indian team are showing: Virat Kohli, who is going to be 35 in October, and Rohit Sharma, who is 36, are beating all odds that come with age and performing well for India. Virat Kohli, showing his batting prowess, smashed his 77th international century while playing against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023, while Rohit Sharma, with his fiery approach, consistently made runs for the team; in fact, in their last game, he was the highest run-scorer from his team, and he scored another half-century in the tournament.
Virat Kohli, with his knock against Pakistan, became the fastest batter to complete 13,000 runs in ODI cricket, and Rohit Sharma, after scoring runs during the match against Sri Lanka, became the second fastest to score 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. With the knocks that both are playing, the chances of these two stepping down from playing international cricket are still bleak, and that’s what England’s former skipper Joe Root agrees with. In his recent statements, he supported Virat and Rohit and encouraged them to play longer by giving examples of Chris Gayle and England’s bowler James Anderson, who played long for their respective teams.
“I think it’s very dangerous just to write off players like Virat and Rohit because of their age. Look at how long Chris Gayle, for example, played T20 cricket. Some of the best players in the world have gone longer, especially in T20 cricket, and have been wonderful with their performances. As long as you’re fit, you go on and play,”

“Jimmy Anderson is a perfect example you look at. He is over 40, he’s still performing exceptionally well. We’re very fortunate that we’ve not lost out on that because we think he’s too old. He’s still playing and he’s still leading our attack. And we’re using all that experience and skill to our advantage. We’re seeing him as a talent and ability and a wonderful player on his own”
