Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar, had to leave the field early in the second half of Inter Miami’s match against Toronto FC on Wednesday night. The club confirmed that Messi aggravated an old injury in his left knee and will undergo further tests to determine the extent of the damage.
Inter Miami won the match by 4-0 against Toronto FC, which really showcases how good the team is without Messi because all the other goals came after Messi was substituted in the 37th minute. Robert Taylor scored twice after being a sub with Messi and also gave an assist, which clearly shows his amazing skill play.
Messi’s injury is a major blow for Inter Miami, who are preparing to face Houston Dynamo in Sunday’s US Open Cup final. The 34-year-old has been instrumental in the team’s success this season, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 11 appearances.
Inter Miami coach Phil Neville expressed his concern for Messi after the game: “He felt something in his knee, and we didn’t want to take any risks. He’s been playing with some discomfort for a while, but he’s a warrior and always wants to be on the pitch. We hope it’s nothing serious and he can recover quickly.”
Messi joined Inter Miami in July after his shock departure from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, where he spent 21 years and won 35 trophies. He signed a two-year contract with a third-year option, becoming the highest-paid player in MLS history. He has quickly adapted to his new surroundings and formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, another former Barcelona star.
Inter Miami fans will be hoping that Messi can recover in time for the US Open Cup final, which would be his first chance to win a trophy with his new club. The US Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States, dating back to 1914. Inter Miami reached the final by beating Cincinnati, Birmingham Legion FC, and Nashville, while Houston Dynamo defeated Real Salt Lake and Minnesota.
