Tottenham Hotspur Holds Exploratory Talks with Johan Lange for Director of Football Role

Johan Lange

Tottenham Hotspur is actively considering Johan Lange as a candidate for the vacant director of football position. This potential move follows the resignation of Fabio Paratici in April, who stepped down due to a 30-month ban from football-related activities imposed by FIFA. The ban was related to his alleged involvement in inflating capital gains from player trading, and it was partially reduced on appeal.

The discussions surrounding Lange’s possible departure from his current role at Aston Villa are still in their early stages. Lange currently serves as the global director of football development and international academies at Villa, a position he assumed in June of this year as part of the club’s internal restructuring process.

Before joining Villa, Lange held the position of sporting director at the club, having been appointed in 2020. During his tenure, he played a significant role in key signings, including Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash, and Emiliano Martinez. Prior to his time at Villa, Lange served as the technical director at Copenhagen from May 2014 to July 2020.

At Tottenham, Lange would report to Scott Munn, the chief football officer who recently took up his role, leaving his position as the chief executive of City Football Group (CFG) China. Munn’s responsibilities include overseeing all footballing departments, including the academy and the women’s team. This organizational structure is somewhat similar to that of Manchester City, with Munn in a role akin to CFG’s chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, and the director of football handling player deals, similar to the role of Txiki Begiristain.

As of now, Tottenham has not officially commented on the potential appointment of Johan Lange. However, Lange’s experience and track record in football management make him a notable candidate for the director of football role at the Premier League club.
