Brentford is determined to retain the services of their star striker, Ivan Toney, beyond the January transfer window, despite growing interest from Premier League clubs. Sources have indicated that the Bees are keen to keep Toney, 27, until at least the summer, mainly due to concerns over a potential relegation battle in the coming months.
Toney, who is now back in training with the London-based club following a gambling suspension, won’t be eligible to return to the starting lineup until January 17. Nevertheless, several clubs, including Tottenham and Chelsea, are closely monitoring his situation and are expected to make bids in the upcoming transfer window.
While Arsenal has also been linked with Toney, Newcastle United, despite their interest in bolstering their attack, isn’t believed to be in the race for his signature. Reports suggest that Newcastle is looking for a younger striker in the January window to learn from experienced forwards Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.
Brentford, aware of Toney’s market value and his vital role in the team, is reportedly prepared to demand a substantial fee, possibly close to £100 million, should they entertain offers in January. However, a move away from the club might be more likely in the summer of 2024 when Toney will enter the final year of his contract.
One factor potentially deterring suitors is Toney’s lack of game time in the 2023-24 season. Having had an impressive campaign last year, where he notched 21 goals and provided five assists in 35 games across all competitions, including 20 goals in the Premier League, his absence has had a noticeable impact on Brentford’s form.
Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table with seven points after seven games, Brentford’s resolve to retain Toney reflects their determination to preserve their top-flight status and build on the promising start to their maiden Premier League campaign.
