In a thrilling display of badminton prowess, Indian shuttler Malvika Bansod triumphed over Brazil’s Juliana Vieira at the Hylo Open 2023 tournament in Saarbrucken, Germany, securing a spot in the women’s singles quarter-finals.
Ranked 51st globally in the sport, Bansod faced off against the 61st-ranked Vieira in a nail-biting encounter that lasted 35 minutes. The opening game saw Vieira taking an early lead, surging ahead 9-3. However, Bansod showed her mettle, clawing her way back with six consecutive points, levelling the score.
As the game approached its climax, Vieira held a 19-16 advantage, seemingly poised to claim the first set. Yet, Bansod executed a remarkable comeback, securing the next four points and ultimately clinching the game.
The second game, in contrast, proved to be a one-sided affair. Bansod dominated, opening up a commanding 7-1 lead, which she extended to a staggering 14-4 before sealing the match with a 21-10 victory.
In the quarter-finals, scheduled for the following day, Malvika Bansod is set to face Kirsty Gilmour, the 25th-ranked player from Scotland. This victory has marked her debut appearance in the BWF World Tour 2023 season’s quarter-finals, signifying her growing prowess in international badminton.
The Hylo Open 2023 holds particular importance as its results contribute to the qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics, making Bansod’s impressive performance a significant stride towards representing India on the Olympic stage.
However, the tournament brought mixed fortunes for Indian shuttlers, as world No. 58 Mithun Manjunath faced defeat in the men’s singles round of 16. He encountered a formidable opponent in Hong Kong China’s world No. 19, Cheuk Yiu Lee, who secured victory with scores of 21-13, 21-17 in just 32 minutes of play.
Manjunath showcased determination, putting up a strong challenge early in both games, but was unable to maintain the momentum during the critical phases, ultimately bowing out of the tournament.
With Manjunath’s exit, Malvika Bansod remains the last remaining hope for India at the Hylo Open 2023, carrying the aspirations of the nation as she advances further in this prestigious badminton event.
