Celtic’s Reo Hatate, who has attracted the attention of Premier League clubs, is unlikely to make a January move due to a serious hamstring injury, sources have revealed. The 25-year-old central midfielder had been linked with a possible transfer to Tottenham, among other clubs.
However, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has recently ruled out Hatate’s return to the pitch until after Christmas, following a significant hamstring injury sustained during a match against Atletico Madrid on October 25.
Celtic secured Hatate’s services until the summer of 2028 with a new contract signed in September, amid interest from Premier League clubs. This new agreement ensures that the Japan international will remain at the club at least until the summer of 2024, allowing him ample time to recover from his injury.
The club has been proactive in securing its top players to long-term contracts to ward off interest from other clubs. Key performers like Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O’Riley have committed their futures to Celtic with renewed contracts.
Hatate, who had previously missed a month this season due to a calf injury, has made valuable contributions with two goals and two assists during the current campaign.
With Hatate set to miss at least 11 games leading up to Christmas, Celtic faces some challenges. Additionally, the club is hosting Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on December 30. Despite their strong league position, sitting atop the table with a five-point lead over their Glasgow rivals, Celtic has struggled in the Champions League, securing just one point from a possible nine at the halfway point in their group.
As a result of his injury setback, it appears that Hatate’s move to the Premier League, at least in the upcoming January transfer window, is unlikely to materialize, keeping him at Celtic Park until he makes a full recovery.
