Why did BCCI Postpone India’s squad announcement meeting?

Gautam Gambhir

The apex governing body of Indian Cricket BCCI has postponed the meeting of India’s squad announcement for the Sri Lanka tour, which was scheduled today. But what were the reasons behind suddenly postponing a scheduled meeting where the upcoming Sri Lanka tour squad was to be announced? According to some reports, the reason behind delaying the meeting is the contention between BCCI and Gautam Gambhir regarding who will captain India in the upcoming T20I series. Reports came out that Gautam Gambhir is backing Suryakumar Yadav to captain India instead of Hardik Pandya, who has been captaining India in the T20I series when Rohit Sharma was out from the limited overs format.

After ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is the second International series that India is going to be part of, just after the World Cup 2024, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja announcing retirement from the T20I format after winning the World Cup. India toured Zimbabwe, where Shubman Gill was captaining a young Indian side against Zimbabwe after losing the first match of the five-match T20I series. Shubman Gill led Indian team won the rest of the four matches to claim series by 4-1. Now, after the Zimbabwe tour. India is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a 3-match T20I series followed by 3 match ODI series, and it is most likely that whoever between Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav is announced as captain for the upcoming T20I series will likely represent India in the T20I format as captain in further tournaments.

This will be Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach of the Indian side after Rahul Dravid stepped down post the T20 World Cup 2024. Gautam Gambhir coached KKR in the IPL 2024, and under him, KKR claimed the trophy after a decade. He has a lot of hype behind him. It will be exciting to see the Indian side under GG next.
