Adrian Newey: The Genius of Formula One Engineering

Adrian Newey Signed for Aston Martin

The 65-year-old Formula One Aerodynaicst Adrian Martin Newey will go on to join Aston Martin Racing as the shareholder and the Managing Technical Partner for the next season after having a great, successful career with Red Bull Racing.

Adrian is from Colchester, Essex, U.K., and earned his degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Southampton in 1980. Right after that, he joined the Fittipaldi Formula One team under Harvey Postlethwaite and, in 1981, joined Johnny Cecotto in European Formula 2.

Early Career

Newey’s interest in engineering started early. He studied Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Southampton and graduated with top honors in 1980. His first job in motorsport was with the Fittipaldi Formula One team. In 1981, he joined the March team, designing cars that won major races in the IMSA GTP series and the Indy 500.

Success with Williams

Adrian Newey’s time at Williams (1991-1997) was highly successful. He designed cars that won multiple championships, including the 1992 and 1996 titles. Williams remained dominant despite challenges like Ayrton Senna’s tragic death in 1994. Newey’s designs helped the team win 59 races and four driver’s championships before he moved to McLaren.

Achievements with McLaren

Newey joined McLaren in 1997. His cars helped Mika Hakkinen win the Drivers’ Championships in 1998 and 1999. McLaren also won the Constructors’ Championship in 1998. Newey’s work at McLaren further established him as a top engineer in Formula One.

Dominance with Red Bull Racing

Newey’s most successful period came with Red Bull Racing, which he joined in 2006. His designs led to four consecutive Drivers’ Championships for Sebastian Vettel from 2010 to 2013. Red Bull also won the Constructors’ Championships in those years. Newey’s cars continued to dominate with Max Verstappen, who won the Drivers’ Championship in 2021 and both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in 2022 and 2023.

New Chapter with Aston Martin

In May 2024, Newey left Red Bull Racing to work on a new project, the RB17 hypercar. However, he soon returned to Formula One by joining Aston Martin Racing as a shareholder and Managing Technical Partner in September 2024. This move was seen as a brilliant decision by Lawrence Stroll, the owner of Aston Martin Racing.

Adrian will join the team of Aston Martin on March 1st, 2025. He will earn around £20m as the basic salary and £30m with bonuses at Aston Martin, making him one of the highest-paid Formula One technicians.

I am thrilled to be joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 Team, I have been hugely inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence [Stroll] brings to everything he is involved with. Lawrence is determined to create a world-beating team.

He is the only majority team owner who is actively engaged in the sport. His commitment is demonstrated in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state of the art but have a layout that creates a great environment to work in.

“Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team and I am very much looking forward to helping reach that goal.”
