No one gave a chance to the Afghanistan side to win the ODI match against the South African side because the format is bigger than T20I, where the weaker teams have more chances to win than the ODI, but Afghanistan won the match by six wickets and shocked the world to get ahead in the series by 1-0.
In the recent T20I World Cup, Afghanistan made it to the Semi-Final, which only Brain Lara predicted. However, they lost badly against the South African side in the semi-finals. Still, it was their best finish in any ICC event, which made it clear to everyone that they are not any weak team anymore.
Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to bat first as it was hot and dry. However, that did not go well for his team. In the third over of Fazalhaq Farooqi, they lost their first wicket. After that, they collapsed and lost seven wickets on just 37 runs. However, Wiaan Mulder and Bjorn Fortuin’s partnership took them to 75 runs. In the end, South Africa scored 106 runs in just 33.3 overs.
While Afghanistan returned to the chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz lost his wicket in just three balls, and Rahmat Shah got out on just 15 runs. However, Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib were able to play sensible cricket to win their first ODI match against South Africa.

Afghanistan vs South Africa 1st ODI Both Team Captains Post Match Statements
We were a few runs short. Some good honest reflections can take place tonight and tomorrow and we can come up with better plans on Friday. They made it tough for us but I still believe we are a better batting unit. We need solid gameplans and put pressure back on them. We couldn’t put them under pressure. Honest learnings. We will look to bounce back. Gameplans and approaches would be different for each player but as long as it toes the team’s line we will be fine.
