PAK(W) vs SL(W): Pakistan won their first T20 World Cup 2024 match, defeating Sri Lanka by 31 runs.
Pakistan’s skipper, Fatima Sana, won the toss and elected to bat first. It wasn’t a good start for Pakistan, as Gull Feroza got out in the second over of the powerplay. Soon Muneeba Ali got out. Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin scored runs from both ends and kept the scoreboard running. Sri Lanka’s skipper came into the attack and dismissed Sidra Amin. Later, she picked two more wickets as Pakistan looked clueless in front of Sri Lanka’s attack. They were 8 down with 84 runs on the board. Skipper Fatima Sana played a captain’s innings and scored a crucial 30 runs down the order for her team to take it to a fighting total of 116 runs at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 117 runs, which wasn’t looking that big for a team like Sri Lanka plus, Pakistan’s pace spearhead Diana Baig got injured in the first over of the innings, but that didn’t let the spirit of Pakistan’s team break as skipper Fatima Sana took the charge and dismissed Chamari Athapaththu in the third over of the powerplay. Pakistan bowlers kept maintaining the pressure on Sri Lanka’s batters, which led to wickets. Nilakshika Silva was the highest scorer for Sri Lanka’s side, scoring 22 runs, but Sri Lanka fell short of 31 runs and lost the match.

T20 Women’s World Cup 2024, Match 2nd: PAK(W) vs SL(W)| Captains’ Corner
“I would like to congratulate Sana, she’s played good cricket, leading from the front. That’s really good for Pakistan. We struggled to chase. We have to adjust to conditions. These are good for batters, I hope we can bounce back. We bowled well. We have to bat really good too. We can’t say wicket is slow and outfield is like this. We have to play positive cricket. [on taking on Australia next] Actually, approach is important. We have to play fearless cricket. They are a good team, if we can play best cricket we can beat any team.”
Chamari Athapaththu(Sri Lanka Captain) said post-match
“I am excited, thanks for the team they supported well. All credit goes to management. I blame myself [for the score], but I tried to back myself and be calm to hit. [on bowling] Obviously, we all know Chamari is a good player, we needed that wicket to have a good start and we got it. We won the toss and we wanted a lot of runs but we didn’t get. But we still achieved the target in the game. [on Baig] Unfortunately she was injured. She is our main player. I had to calm myself as captain and carry on with the ball after that. We will ask her how she is after the game. We need to take the momentum and carry this to next match.”
