HEA vs STA: In the match 19th of the Big Bash League(2024-25), defending champions Brisbane Heat faced defeat against Melbourne Stars.
Melbourne Stars, after winning the toss, elected to bowl first. Tom Banton and Colin Munro started the innings for Brisbane Heat, but in the second over of the game, Colin Munro, while trying to flick the ball to the leg side, got caught at point as Heat lost its captain. Nathan McSweeney started well but couldn’t go beyond 9 runs as Peter Siddle bowled him in the first ball of his spell. Brisbane Heat was 4/39, and then Max Bryant started his game and kept scoring from his end. The right-handed batter started slow but played till the end and scored his fifty. At the end of the 20 overs, Brisbane Heat put 149 runs on the board.
Chasing 150 runs, Melbourne Stars’ start was pathetic as Ben Duckett got caught in the first ball of the second innings. The pacers did the work for Brisbane Heat and dismissed the other top-order batters in low scores to put pressure on Melbourne Stars. Stars were 3/14 and needed a partnership. That’s when skipper Marcus Stoinis and right-handed batter Dan Lawrence built the partnership for the 4th wicket. Both batters were cautious and lethal simultaneously, with Stoinis leading the charge for his team. Dan Lawrence supported his captain, and both scored in their fifties. In the 18.1 overs, Melbourne Stars won the match by 5 wickets to register the first victory of the season.

HEA vs STA, Big Bash League, 19th Match: Captains’ Corner
It is a relief (to win the first match of the season), great to start the new year with a win. It’s something I have been talking about – no matter the results, keep fighting with the same attitude. (Partnership with Lawrence) It shows partnerships win matches, shows that cliches of cricket still hold true. He batted brilliantly, kept me calm, I tried to keep him calm, it was important for the team. As a senior player, I need to stand up. I have been getting starts, it was time to push on with that. We are going to be back to the MCG, we’ve got a chance to make that a fortress.
