After vacating his featherweight title, Ilia Topuria moved to the lightweight division, making it a battleground where numerous contenders are pushing the UFC to get their fight booked against the reigning lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev. From Justin Gaethje to Charles Oliveira, everyone wants to get a shot at the title. When it comes to the Spaniards directly a fight against Islam, which everyone thought would happen as Ilia vacated the title, but so far, Islam Makhachev and his team have denied giving the Spaniard a direct shot at the title and want him to prove himself first at 155lbs.
The same goes for Charles Oliveira who is not willing to fight Ilia Topuria and the latter is not happy with the lightweights denying him. Speaking to the reporters “La leyenda” said this.
“I’m preparing for Islam Makhachev,”. All my training is focused on Islam or Charles because I don’t see any other contenders. So I have those two names in mind. Neither of them want to step up.
He said
Ilia Topuria, taking a dig at Islam Makhachev, said that the champ is only making excuses not to fight him because all of them are scared. He said that he would be as scared as them if he had to fight himself.
“They say champs fight whoever they’re told to and then they say he’s too small to fight. I switch weight classes, they say I’m small now. Then they say I haven’t earned it yet. Well, these are signs of fear, we all know it. But it’s normal, I’d be scared too.”
He added
So far, it is not announced against whom Islam Makhachev is going to fight next but it is most likely to be announced by UFC soon with the end of Ramadan.
