IPL 2025 will resume from May 17th, this week with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The league was halted for a week due to the rising border tensions between India and Pakistan and citing the security of the players and nation as a whole, BCCI and IPL officials decided to suspend the tournament for a week or indefinitely if the situation doesn’t improve. Hopefully India and Pakistan agreed for a ceasefire with the mediation of the USA and the BCCI decided to resume the tournament with new fixtures and changes in the venues.
Though the resumption of the IPL 2025 is good news for cricket fans, it also brings problems for the IPL franchises, who lost some of their vital overseas players amid the tensions. Australian players like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and other overseas players are hot topics of the discussion on whether these players’ refusal to return to perform IPL duties should be punished or they are exempt from any punishments for pulling out of the competition mid-way. Here’s what the IPL rulebook says for such situations.
IPL’s Force Majeure Clause Explained
The Force Majeure clause of the IPL rulebook is a contractual term present in the contracts of all IPL players. It states that the players are free from their contractual terms and obligations if extraordinary circumstances like War, Geopolitical Instability, or Natural disaster come into play. The Force Majeure Clause immunizes the players from any bans, fines, or penalization from the franchises in such scenarios.
Would The BCCI Rule Of a 2-Year Ban For Pull-Out Apply Here?
Before the start of the IPL 2025, the BCCI is going to be strict on the players and has made a rule for pulling out of the competition mid-way. As per the rule, any player who pulls out from the ongoing IPL season due to weird reasons would be banned for 2 years from the IPL, but the Force Majeure clause nullified the rule, as overseas players were genuinely concerned about their safety and pulled out due to the geopolitical tensions.
