Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram during WTC final

The World Test Championship(2023-25) final took an intense turn on day 3 when Australia’s Mitchell Starc scored a fifty to increase his team’s lead to 282 runs. The left-arm bowler remained not out on the score of 58 runs and built a good partnership with Josh Hazlewood for the final wicket of the second innings. Australia was eyeing a comfortable victory over South Africa, but the “Proteas” didn’t let that happen so far. South African skipper Temba Bavuma and right-handed opener Aiden Markram built a solid 3rd wicket partnership to take their team to 213 runs at the end of Day 3 of the WTC final.

After getting out on a duck in the first innings, Aiden Markram started cautiously, though Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder got out early while chasing the target of 282 runs. The match-turning moment came in the 20th over when a surprise bounce obtained by the delivery bowled by Mitchell Starc hit the gloves of Temba Bavuma, and Steve Smith dropped the catch. From there, the two batted cautiously and didn’t give many chances to the bowlers; they kept running the scoreboard, which put pressure on the Australian side.

They smartly rotated the strikes and defended the good deliveries; Aiden Markram scored his fifty in 69 deliveries. Skipper Temba Bavuma, despite getting a niggle in his leg, held his ground and scored his fifty; meanwhile, Markram reached closer to the three-digit mark. In the 55th over, the moment came for the opener, who glanced a leg-side delivery to a boundary to get his hundred in the final and took his team closer to the target. At the end of Day 3, South Africa was 213/2 and required only 69 runs to get the victory and lift the trophy.
