Former UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev renounced his 155lbs title in May 2025, weeks after Jack Della Maddalena claimed the Welterweight title after defeating Belal Muhammad at UFC 315. Islam Makhachev renounced the title to move up in the weight class, and his next fight will be in the 170-pound division, likely for the Welterweight title. Jack Della Maddalena has already said that he will avenge his countrymen’s loss against Islam Makhachev if they fight next. UFC has yet to make the fight official, but the former lightweight champion has a date in mind.
Islam Makhachev was present at the UFC Abu Dhabi event, which recently culminated, and the Dagestani has a month in mind. Here is what he said.
“We’ve almost agreed on everything. There’s a 90 percent chance the fight happens in November.”

It will be a test for Islam Makhachev to counter Jack Della Maddalena in the octagon and that’s what Islam’s friend and coach Khabib Nurmagomedov thinks as well. In a recent interview former lightweight champion who retired undefeated opened up on the Australian and said this.
I think Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam’s career. That’s my opinion. Not Charles [Oliveira], no one else. None of those other fighters,”

JDM is undefeated in the UFC so far, and his exponential rise in the Welterweight division is phenomenal. On the feet and the ground, he showed tremendous control and composure so far, and defeating Belal Muhammad was the moment when the Australian took the Welterweight gold home. Islam’s renouncement of the title gave Ilia Topuria the opportunity to fight for the vacant title, and the Spaniard knocked out Charles Oliveira to become a champion in the second division.
If Islam Makhachev defeats Jack Della Maddalena, the UFC will likely attempt to schedule a fight between Islam and Ilia next.
