Ashton Agar Reflects on Challenges of Coming Home After Sitting Out Two Tests

When Ashton Agar returned from India following Australia‘s 2-1 victory in the Test series, he gave his insight on playing conditions in the country. The off-spinner had been surprisingly left out for the first two Tests but got his chance to play in the last two. In an interview, he spoke of how tough it had been for bowlers, citing long innings and hot temperatures as some of the biggest challenges. He shared how he’d taken extra recovery days and precautions given how important it had been for him to remain fit for the rigorous series. It was clear that Agar respected the game in India and applauded both teams for their determination despite difficult circumstances.

Ashton Agar spoke to the media from his home soil, shortly before he was due to play in the Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup for Western Australia. The Australian all-rounder had experienced disappointment in India with his omission from the playing XI ahead of the third Test in a series severely hampered by a succession of withdrawals and later voluntary departures. Despite this, Agar maintained a positive attitude and talked openly about the conditions faced while touring India. His honest reflections on the difficulties and complexities of being part of an Australia squad undergoing major upheaval has seen him add yet another chapter of insight into how seriously Cricket is taken by players representing their nation at both international and domestic level.

David Agar is one of Australia’s rising cricket stars and a man of few words. His understated approach comes to the fore when he described playing red ball games as “hard”; despite only playing three times in three years, Agar believes that it is hard to expect his game to be perfect while at the same time giving himself the credit of being able to adapt to changing conditions. His decision to play in India – a country known for its often grueling cricketing environment – speaks volumes about his commitment and class. He realizes that playing abroad will highlight any deficiencies and goes onto say India is “bloody hard.” As a team they embody something really special – unrivaled in their ability to establish an advantage on their home turf. Agar admirably expresses an appreciation for all these challenges with poise and determination.

Ashton Agar has been selected in Australia’s squad for their upcoming tour of India to take part in the ODI series. After arriving home from a successful tour at the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the 29-year-old will once again be travelling across continents to compete. The 3 matches, which form the series, will all take place in different locations over 5 days: Mumbai on March 17th, YS Raja Reddy Cricket Stadium on 19th and Chennai on 22nd. All eyes are definitely on Ashton as he looks to make his presence felt against one of the best teams on the planet.

The Australian ODI squad is absolutely stacked with firepower, boasting some of the brightest stars in cricket. Pat Cummins who was recently made captain leads the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell into battle, while Ashton Agar, Marcus Stoinis and Jhye Richardson are all reliable hands in the middle order. The bowling is headlined by Mitchell Starc and Sean Abbott – two fast bowlers who can turn a match on its head – while Mitch Marsh’s middle-overs mastery and Adam Zampa’s subtle guile offer pinpoint accuracy whenever needed. All in all, this Australian side looks set to roar across world cricket once more.
